Curious Works offers creative sector-focused skills development and work experience for young people in Wigan and Leigh.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a new direction, Curious Works can help you build the skills, confidence, and experience to take your next step.
Delivered by Curious Minds, with funding from Greater Manchester Combined Authority and WEA, it supports young people aged between 16 and 25 who are interested in exploring a career in the creative or cultural sectors.

Applications are now open for this year’s Curious Works job placements. These are paid, short-term work in real creative workplaces in the Wigan Borough. If you're curious about stepping into the creative world and want to gain real experience while getting paid, now’s your chance.
You don’t need any past work experience, all we ask is that you bring your creativity, curiosity and a keenness to get stuck in and learn as you go.
Key details:
- Eligibility: For young people aged 16–25 in Wigan Borough who are not currently in education, employment or training.
- Job format: 2 days a week for 3 months (November to January). Days and times vary depending on the placement – just ask if you need more info.
- Mentoring: You’ll spend one day a month with Curious Minds for creative skills-building and mentoring. These sessions are fun, hands-on, and a key part of the experience.
- Timeline:
- Deadline to apply: Wednesday 15th October at 4pm (exception - Wigan Youth Zone, 1st October)
- Interviews: Week beginning 20th October
- Start date: First week of November
- Pay: You’ll earn the Real Living Wage - £12.60/hour.

Social Media Assistant, with Curious Minds
We’re looking for a creative and enthusiastic young person to help us to plan and shape oursocial media content, especially the stuff we share with other 16–25 year olds like you. You’ll be part of our communications team, helping us to come up with content ideas, planposts, and make sure that what we share really connects with young creative people likeyou.

What you’ll be doing
- Helping us to plan what we post on platforms like Instagram, Bluesky, Facebook and LinkedIn (and telling us about the platforms you love too!)
- Coming up with creative ideas and themes for content, inspired by trends, current events that young people are interested in and what Curious Minds is up to
- Drafting posts (with support from the team), including writing captions, selecting the right visuals and scheduling them for publication
- Checking out what other organisations and content creators are doing online to help us to learn what works
- Helping us stay up to date with online trends, tools and what’s catching the attention of young people right now

Insights & Storytelling Assistant, with Curious Minds
Are you curious about how creative programmes make a difference in people’s lives? Do you enjoy storytelling, design, or finding imaginative ways to gather and share information? This role could be for you! Working closely with Curious Minds' Head of Impact & Evaluation, you help us understand and share the real-world impact of our work, especially through the voices of young people like you.

What you’ll be doing
- Collecting Stories: Chatting with young people who’ve taken part in our programmes (like Chance to See) and capturing their experiences through interviews, creative questionnaires, or other fun methods.
- Designing Evaluation Tools: Helping us come up with imaginative ways to gather feedback, this could be through games, visual prompts, or even digital tools.
- Creating Reports: Turning information into something beautiful and easy to understand using design tools like Canva (we’ll show you how if you’re new to it!).
- Shaping the Future: Your insights will help us improve our programmes and show funders the difference we’re making.

You don’t need formal qualifications or experience. We’re looking for someone who is:
- Is interested in creative and cultural things (things like drama, dance, music, gaming) and wants to share the positive difference these can make in young people’s lives.

Event Producer, with Curious Minds (2 roles available)
We’re looking for two creative and enthusiastic young people someone to take the lead on planning and running our interactive creative careers fair in Wigan in January ’26.
Supported every step of the way by our Head of Careers & Skills, you will come up with ideas for what the event could look like, and work as part of a team to make them happen. This is a hands-on role where you’ll juggle creative planning with practical organisation.

What you’ll be doing
- Working as a team to plan an interactive creative careers event from start to finish – working out what’s happening, when, and how.
- Keep everything on track – organise budgets, timelines, and employers so nothing gets forgotten.
- Make it look and feel exciting – help with design, layout and other creative touches.
- Run the event on the day – you’ll oversee the setting up, greeting guests, solving problems, and making sure everyone has a great time.
- Share the story – work with our marketing team to promote the event and tell young people like you how they can get involved.
- Wrapping things up – pack down, thank everyone involved, and look at what went well and what could be better next time.

Creative Projects Support Assistant, with Everyday
We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic person to help us with our creative projects at Everyday. You’ll be part of our small and friendly team, helping us make different creative projects happen for the people of Wigan. This is a varied role with lots of new things to try – one day you could be supporting an artist to deliver a workshop, another day you could be helping with our marketing and social media posts.

- Up for learning new things – you don’t need experience, just a positive attitude and a willingness to get stuck in.
- Friendly and reliable – happy to work with others, turn up on time, and give things your very best effort.
Please note: For this role, you need to be available to work on Wednesdays in our office at The Old Courts. The rest of your hours can be managed flexibly in line with your tasks, and by agreement with your line managers.
Studio Assistant, with Northern Heart Films
This is a fantastic opportunity to support Northern Heart Films, an award-winning film studio in Wigan. The Studio Assistant will help the team expand their original documentaries and build upon the Northern Doc Fund, developing exciting workshops and events.
You'll be supporting the team with all sorts of tasks, from day-to-day admin and preparing for shoots, to being on location during production or helping out at workshops / events.

What you’ll be doing
- Providing admin support including taking phone and email enquiries, scheduling meetings, managing the studio diary, taking notes and updating spreadsheets.
- Organising and maintaining the studio space, including equipment maintenance and updating equipment checklists.

Desired but not essential:
- Ability to capture behind the scenes image and video.
- Some prior knowledge of how to use and handle camera, audio and editing equipment.
Project Assistant, with Groundwork CLM
As part of our ‘Down To Earth’ programme, communities in Wigan Borough are invited to shape and create local, national, and international art across the borough. This role is a fantastic opportunity to support 'Borough of Joy', a creative project celebrating everyday happiness across Wigan. From November to January, you’ll work with artist Angelica Vanesse to help spread joy through community-led art.

What you’ll be doing
- Work with the lead artist of ‘Borough of Joy’ to build new communities around 4 treasure chests placed in different parts of the borough.
- Help commission and organise small moments of joy (like performances, pop-ups or creative activities) that will happen in the 4 priority areas through January and February.
- Work with Social Media Officer to keep the ‘Borough of Joy’ Instagram channel buzzing with photos, videos and stories from local people about what brings them joy.
- Provide some day-to-day administrative support to the 'Down to Earth' team across the busy programme of arts events, commissions and festivals.

- Likes connecting with people and listening to their ideas.
- Feels comfortable using Instagram (or wants to get better at it).
- Has good organisational skills and can keep on top of a few different tasks.

Creative Arts Assistant, with Wigan Youth Zone
Please note the deadline for this role is Wednesday 1st October.
This role is designed to give hands-on experience in the planning and delivery of creative arts activities, while developing valuable skills in youth work, arts administration, and event coordination. As Creative Arts Assistant, you’ll work within the Wigan Youth Zone Creative Arts team and closely with the Head of Arts, Art Lead Youth Worker, and Dance Team, depending on your interests.
You’ll be involved in supporting a wide range of creative sessions- from visual arts and textiles to dance and performance - helping to shape programmes that are engaging, inclusive, and youth-led.

- Inputting attendance registers into Salesforce (training provided)
- Carrying out surveys and gathering feedback from members to help improve our arts offer

You’ll also have the opportunity to help plan and prepare for our Creative Arts Winter Showcase in December, a major event that celebrates the talents of young people across Wigan Youth Zone. Project Assistant, with Wigan Museum (Wigan Borough Council)
You will be working on a new gallery exhibition project at Wigan Museum – working in a small team to help remove our current exhibition in November and assisting with the planning and installation of our next exhibition to open in February 2026. This is an opportunity to realise your potential, learn new skills and knowledge about working in museums and creating exhibitions.

What you’ll be doing
- Working in a small team – dedicated to bringing Wigan’s history alive for our visitors
- Removal and packing of objects and artworks from ‘What’s in Store’ exhibition.
- Support key tasks in developing the next exhibition in the gallery space, for example works to prepare the new space, packing and movement of objects, helping to create new content for parts of the displays, installation of objects and parts of new displays.
- Help the curator to develop some social media content - about progress of the project and to persuade young visitors to visit when the new exhibition opens.
Who we’re looking for
You don’t need any formal qualifications or experience. We’re looking for someone who has:
- An interest in museums and galleries, history and heritage.
- Confidence to work on your own and as part of small team on tasks.
- Good communication skills and ability to get on with others.
- Some computer skills e.g. able to work on Microsoft word and Microsoft excel
- Some practical experience of using social media platforms.
