What’s it about?
The continued imbalance of gender representation within arts subjects is often remarked upon but largely unaddressed in the world of education. At what point do some boys start to disengage from the arts? How can primary schools, and arts & cultural organisations working with young children, establish a more inclusive approach?
By Key Stage 4, there is a marked disparity between the numbers of girls and boys taking arts subjects. How can this be redressed by secondary schools and arts & cultural organisations working with teenagers?
The imbalance tips in the opposite direction for the leadership of the creative industries. Can guidance and role models from schools, universities and arts & cultural organisations enable more women to reach the top?
Susan Coles will present the key issues and illustrate their impact on art & design. We’ll then explore how they relate to drama, dance and music. By the end of the afternoon we’ll have considered strategies for schools and arts & cultural organisations to be more successful in their approach to inclusivity across the arts and each participant will have identified their own next steps.
The venue
Manchester School of Art’s new home is the award-winning Benzie Building, which opened in late 2013. This is a great opportunity so see this exciting new space, and to meet staff of their Centre for Engagement Through Art and Design. Following the ALC event, the Centre are holding ‘Art & Design Futures’– a session for teachers, parents and governors, which all are welcome to attend.
